Weekly Deals:Be Sure To Throw Away Used Gift Cards

>> Saturday, January 16, 2010

My brain seems to have been M.I.A. this week. I made countless mistakes and oversights this week in all areas of my life; not just shopping. So many in fact it's downright comical. I did manage to grab some good deals at Publix though.

I spent: $18.55
I saved: $34.55

I bought:
4 Cascadian Farm Granola Bars B1G1 $7.98
minus (2) $1/2 Target printables= $1.49 each
4 Lenders Bagels B1G1 $3.99
minus (2) $1/2 Qs = .49 cents each
4 Quaker Life Cereal B1G1 $9.26
minus (2) $1/2 Target printables = $1.81 each
2 Hunts Ketchup B1G1 = .87 cents each
4 Ronzoni Healthy Harvest pasta B1G1 $3.58
minus (2) $1/2 Qs = .39 cents each

Bakery Thrift Store:

I bought:

1 loaf Nature's Own Wheat bread $1.49
1 pkg. hamburger buns .79 cents
Total: $2.28

WalMart: Okay, this is where I made one of my mistakes and it took me all week to figure it out. I knew I had $25 left on my Walmart gift card so I went to Walmart to get some things we needed including some items for my husbands birthday dinner. I went to pay and there was no money on my gift card. I was certain there was money left but it didn't show up. So I paid the money out of pocket and went home disappointed because I knew there was money on this card. I tried all week to figure out where that money went. Finally last night I was looking through my receipts and found a Walmart gift card. You know, the one with the balance still on it. I had used the wrong one at the store. D'oh! That's what I get for not tossing that old gift card when I used it up. So I still have that $25 so it all worked out. I just learned a lesson in the process.

I spent $34.66 at Walmart on items we needed for the week.

Total spent this week: $55.49

2010 total: $94.24

Help For Haiti

>> Friday, January 15, 2010

It's impossible not to be moved to tears when you see the pictures and hear the stories of the devastation in Haiti. When you see that kind of devastation, it's hard to know where to begin to help. It can leave you feeling helpless.

But we aren't helpless. There are ways we can help. First of all, we can pray. God hears our prayers. Lift up to people of Haiti to Him. Pray that they will feel His comfort, that rescue efforts will not be hampered, that they will be able to get the food, water, shelter and medical care they need, and that they will find hope in a hopeless time.

If you have the means, please consider giving financially as well. There are so many organizations out there that are helping this very moment.

Samaritan's Purse dispatched a team within just a few hours of the quake to help with water, medical care, shelter and other emergency needs. You can contribute to their efforts to help the people of Haiti here.

The Red Cross immediately released $200,000 in aid to assist the people of Haiti and is prepared to take further action after local responders assess the situation. Contribute to the Red Cross
here.

Through World Vision you can not only contribute to emergency relief but you can also sponsor a child and provide long term support to a child in need. To contribute to World Vision go
here.

The blogging community has also come together to help raise money. Crystal at
Money Saving Mom has rallied together a whole list of bloggers who will make a donation for every comment and link left on their blogs. Read about this effort here and be sure to stop by as many of these blogs as possible and leave a comment or link today.

Even with our very tight budget my husband and I feel called to give. Yesterday I gave the balance in my Paypal account to Samaritan's Purse. We have had some extra money come in over the last few days and after discussing it, we have decided to give an additional amount as well. We will donate $1 for every link left and .25 cents for every comment left between now and 1/20/10 up to a total of $100.

So please pray, leave your comments & links below and spread the word on facebook, twitter or your blog.

Menu Plan Monday 1/11/10

>> Monday, January 11, 2010

It's a birthday week at my house as my husband is celebrating his birthday on Friday. That meal isn't planned yet since he still hasn't decided what he wants other than the cake. Our pantry is looking better but I'm still seriously lacking in the meat department around here. Since one of my goals is to cook from scratch more, I've been looking up new recipes to try.

Sandwiches, chips, fruit
Slow Cooker Orange Chicken, brown rice, broccoli
Salsa Chicken and Black Bean Soup (I bought dried black beans for this, a first for me. I usually use canned beans in recipes.)
leftovers
Birthday Dinner? and Red Velvet cake
