Okay, my shopping this week was weird and random. Publix and Winn Dixie didn't have any particularly compelling sales for me. My husband and I decided to check out a couple of new places. First we decided to give Sam's a try. We used to have a Costco membership and really loved it. So we went and scoured the aisles comparing prices. I was disappointed that they seem to have fewer organic items than Costco carried. But overall we found several things that we can get cheaper or as cheap at Sams than at regular stores with sales and coupons. A couple of things I can get a bit cheaper with sales/coupons but not dramatically. Of course, there were plenty of things I can get cheaper in regular stores. But like Costco, we feel that overall the membership is worth it for the items we will save on. Their gas prices are cheaper as well which sweetens the membership deal.

Sam's
We paid $50.28 for the above items. This did not come from our weekly grocery budget but from money we'd set aside from our income tax refund. However, it will be counted in our weekly/yearly total. I will start setting aside money from our weekly budget to make one or two trips a month to Sams. I may actually go back this next week because after looking around they appear to have the best price on walnuts and I am out.

We also decided to give our local CO-OP a try. Think tiny Whole Foods store. You could probably fit the whole thing in the produce section of Whole Foods. They had a suprisingly good variety of things. A lot of their prices were good too. Many of the items I checked were in line with prices at Winn-Dixie and Publix. Some were even better. Some were more expensive. They had a nice bulk foods area that I plan to frequent.

I got a 3 lb. bag of  organic apples for $4.29. $1.40 lb. is considerably cheaper than what I've seen at WD and Publix. The cheapest I have found them there was $1.99 lb.
I got @ 2 lbs. of organic black beans for $1.99 lb.
I got a pkg. of organic whole wheat tortillas for $2.29. This is the best price I've found on WW tortillas here and they are organic to boot. I was pleased.

This wasn't a super week for deals. Publix really didn't have any deals this week to draw me in. And Winn Dixie really didn't have a lot either. I ended up using pretty much all my budget though because I bought some pricier organic products with some of the extra.

Goodwill Shopping Deals

We had a new Goodwill open here this week. I've been anticipating it's opening for over a month now as I drive by it frequently and they've had the sign up announcing the grand opening date. I was even more excited last week when I received a $5 off $20 purchase coupon in the mail for their grand opening. So I decided to brave what I was sure to be absolute craziness and go on the opening day. It proved to be even more crazy than I thought it would be. You couldn't really dig around for deals since there were so many people there but I did find some things we could use. I went there specifically looking for clothes for me, work shirts for my husband, summer clothes for my girls and some decorative items for our house. I also keep a running list in my head of things we could use and look for them at Goodwill and on clearance racks. I managed to make it out of there with only one impulse buy.

I bought:
1 Mini Boden top $1.50(for oldest daughter)
1 khaki bermuda shorts $1.50(for oldest daughter)
1 plaid bermuda shorts NEW $1.50 (for oldest daughter)
2 pair of sandals NEW $7.98 (for daugthers)
1 pk. spoons NEW $1.99(I'll use these in the girls lunches. We're down to just two spoons for lunches so these will be very useful. Also, I'm hoping the bright colors will keep them from tossing them.)
6 cloth napkins .79 cents (for lunch boxes)
Photoshop 6 for Dummies $1.99 (This was my impulse buy. I have had Photoshop 6 for years. I figured there might be something I could learn about it after all this time.)
1 medium white vase .89 cents
2 small white vases $1.18
Total with tax: $20.58
Minus $5/$20 Q
Total OOP: $15.58

Okay, it looks like all I did was shop this week. Since moving I've been trying to get on a new shopping schedule. The sales in Kentucky all started on Sunday so I always did my shopping on Monday or Tuesday. Here most sales start on Wednesday so I would end up shopping at the end of the sale cycle and the stores would often be out of some of the items I was looking for. Deals Of The Week:Stocking The Freezer

>> Friday, January 22, 2010

Our pantry is looking pretty good so I decided to start focusing on stocking up on meat. I've had a hard time planning meals since we didn't have any meat in the freezer to work with. So I'll be focusing on putting our money towards stocking the freezer over the next few weeks.

Even with all the great Register Rewards deals at Walgreens this week, I didn't really need any of the items so I decided so use my RRs that were about to expire on things we needed.

I bought:
Deerfield Farms Shredded Cheese $1.50
Nature's Own Wheat Bread $2.69
Used: $3.50 Register Rewards
Total OOP: .69 cents

Winn Dixie: I've discovered Winn Dixie is the place to find the Manager's Specials. I went primarily for the pork chops, milk and potatoes and just looked for other good deals with the extra money I had.

I bought:
2 Winn Dixie Organic Frozen Veggies $2.50 ($1.25 ea.)
2 pkgs. pork chops B1G1 $3.97
1 pkg. ground round $4.63 (ouch! but my husband wanted burgers)
1 yellow onion .63 cents
1 pk. apples $1.04 (manager's special)
1/2 gal. organic milk $2.99
5 lbs. potatoes $2.50
Total OOP: $18.26

I spent the rest of my Walmart gift card on items we needed including things like chicken, italian sausage, yogurt, cheese, et. and paid an additional $9.44 out of pocket. I also picked up 4 boxes of GM cereal(4 free items Qs) and a box of cheese crackers at Target while getting some non-grocery items. Cereal was free and the crackers went on the Target gift card so $0 out of pocket

Weekly Deals:Be Sure To Throw Away Used Gift Cards

>> Saturday, January 16, 2010

My brain seems to have been M.I.A. this week. I made countless mistakes and oversights this week in all areas of my life; not just shopping. So many in fact it's downright comical. I did manage to grab some good deals at Publix though.

I spent: $18.55
I saved: $34.55

I bought:
4 Cascadian Farm Granola Bars B1G1 $7.98
minus (2) $1/2 Target printables= $1.49 each
4 Lenders Bagels B1G1 $3.99
minus (2) $1/2 Qs = .49 cents each
4 Quaker Life Cereal B1G1 $9.26
minus (2) $1/2 Target printables = $1.81 each
2 Hunts Ketchup B1G1 = .87 cents each
4 Ronzoni Healthy Harvest pasta B1G1 $3.58
minus (2) $1/2 Qs = .39 cents each

Bakery Thrift Store:

I bought:

1 loaf Nature's Own Wheat bread $1.49
1 pkg. hamburger buns .79 cents
Total: $2.28

WalMart: Okay, this is where I made one of my mistakes and it took me all week to figure it out. I knew I had $25 left on my Walmart gift card so I went to Walmart to get some things we needed including some items for my husbands birthday dinner. I went to pay and there was no money on my gift card. I was certain there was money left but it didn't show up. So I paid the money out of pocket and went home disappointed because I knew there was money on this card. I tried all week to figure out where that money went. Finally last night I was looking through my receipts and found a Walmart gift card. You know, the one with the balance still on it. I had used the wrong one at the store. D'oh! That's what I get for not tossing that old gift card when I used it up. So I still have that $25 so it all worked out. I just learned a lesson in the process.

I spent $34.66 at Walmart on items we needed for the week.

Total spent this week: $55.49

2010 total: $94.24

Deals Of The Week: Inexpensive Bread

>> Saturday, January 9, 2010

I went to several stores this week. This isn't the way I normally shop but since I'm rebuilding the stockpile I'm taking advantage of more of the deals out there. It really didn't take that much time. On Monday, I went to the bakery thrift store, Walgreens, CVS and Winn-Dixie. The whole trip took about an hour. Then on Wednesday I went to Walmart to pick up some things and used my gift card. I decided to try the bakery thrift store this week and was so happy I did. They carry Nature's Own bread which is one of the brands I like to buy. And while their everyday price of $1.49 is about $1 cheaper than it is in most stores around here, they have a Manager's Special table and I was able to get it for even less. Happy dance! Here's a breakdown of my deals.

Received: $3.50 Register Rewards

Winn Dixie

Okay, I know I said in my weekly menu planning post that I'm going to try to do more cooking from scratch but my husband saw the Tombstone make a meal deal at Winn Dixie and declared we had to have it. The breadsticks and mozzerella sticks that were part of the deal were sold out so I got a rain check for them.
2 Tombsone pizzas $11.58
1 pkg. Winn Dixie Breadsticks Free(will get with rain check)
1 pkg. Farm Rich mozzarella sticks Free(will get with rain check)
1 2 liter Coke Free

I've heard great things about Publix so I figured I needed to check it out. Moving also means we have to restock our pantry and freezer. For Christmas, I received gift cards to Target, WalMart & Publix which will make restocking easier on us given our current budget. I plan to stretch those cards as far as I can. This week I decided to give Publix a try and was pleasantly surprised for the most part. I'm finding bread, milk and meat to be quite expensive here so I'm going to have to figure out where to get the best deals on those. So far I've not found any of the awesome Manager's Specials on bread like I was used to in Kentucky.

So here's how I did at Publix. Keep in mind we had nothing in the freezer and not much in the pantry so not everything purchased was a rock bottom deal.

I spent: $39.57 (on gift card so ZERO out of pocket)
I saved: $33.64
